Why Teachers Are Important On A Playground

It is critical that playgrounds are safe for kids to play on.  An elementary school yard needs to be managed at all times.  Anything can occur, and a child can be injured quite easily.  You won’t necessarily be able to avoid an accident.  Children need guidelines and rules, as well as teacher supervision to stay safe.  This will allow children to have a good time and stay away from injury.

Playground accidents are extremely common and often result in small injuries.  10 percent of all injuries in schoolyards, though, are serious, requiring emergency help, and sometimes even surgeries.  A lack in management is the number one cause of bad injuries.  Supervisors need to explain to students all the rules as well as enforce them.  If a kid is not playing within the rules, you should punish them and bench them so that they cannot play.  Being overly cautious is never an unwise thing.

Your  supervisors should be trained in safety for playgrounds.  Pass out safety handbooks that give rules and tips for emergency issues.  Your playground set staff will learn the importance of being calm, staying aware, and being consistent.  You will learn to catch inappropriate game playing near outdoor playground equipment.  Schools will want to be sure there are adequate teachers for the size of playground and number of children.  If you are short on staff, you may want to consider closing spots off that you cannot watch closely.  This can really help keep your injury numbers down.

You want to prevent lawsuits.  Lawsuits are common when playgrounds are lacking supervision.  Lawsuits occur when a child has been severely injured while at school.  This is usually the only reason any kid’s parents will sue.  The lawsuit will normally try to prove that there was little or no supervision.  Being proactive is one of the best ways to ensure safety and stop lawsuits from taking place.

A safe play time is what every child deserves.  They need to get outdoors, have fun, and get some exercise.  Unfortunately, children do not always follow the rules, especially when playing outdoors.  This is why adults are critical.  It is your duty to make sure that they are safe.  If you do not have a playground training program, find out how your school can create one.  Staff must provide the highest care possible so that students can be saved from injury.
