Thieves from all walks of life have been able to stay away from police over the years using various methods to disappear permanently. The dawn of new small technology has made it extremely tough for many people to disappear, yet seasoned criminals still find it easy to elude police for extended periods of time. There are a few key strategies that they have used over the years, but there are some issues with them when they are not done correctly.
Whether put together with another idea or just done on its own, assuming a new identity has been the go to strategy for criminals everywhere. On the surface it seems simple to steal someone’s personal information and move to a discreet town inside the country and forget the past. Unfortunately many of these people get caught at some point, and one of two reasons is usually the culprit. Many criminals cannot wait to get out of their area so they do not get caught, but end up becoming a suspect in the process. Criminals that stay on the run for a long period are usually recognized by individuals after national notices are released. Lots of people will eventually end up letting one of their friends or family know where they are, and the police will begin to move in on them.
Seasoned criminals who plan their crimes in advance will usually apply for US passports under an assumed identity well in advance to make for a fast getaway. Doing it this way with a fake name will permit them to escape but come back discreetly should they ever decide to. The idea is to apply for Russian visas or visas for another country for visitation and ultimately apply for citizenship. Many countries have security for their citizen that does not permit them to be taken by other governments. Although a few do get away like this, criminals of the past have run into rough patches with the government of their new country. These individuals have often been called spies and abused with no protection for the individual, making for an environment that is worse than living in prison.
Many people place themselves in a type of prison when they escape and have to live as a recluse forever. Determined criminals that do not plan ahead will often go into hiding as a recluse or live as a wanderer for the remainder of their lives. Although a lot of these people never get caught, they end up being deranged and do not live happy lives.
